Nordic-powered wearable running pod offers Bluetooth low energy wireless connectivity to bring real-time improvements in performance and reduce injury

‘Lumo Run’ employs Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52832, a powerful Bluetooth low energy SoC, to deliver in-run audio and visual form correction cues via partner iOS app

Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Palo Alto, CA-based sports performance technology company, Lumo Bodytech, has selected Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth® low energy (previously known as Bluetooth Smart) System-on-Chip (SoC) for its ‘Lumo Run’ wearable pod. Lumo Run tracks a range of biomechanical and general running metrics that runners can use to improve running performance and reduce injury, including cadence, braking, pelvic-rotation and -drop, bounce, time, distance, and speed.

The pod clips onto the back of the user’s shorts from where its in-built accelerometer, magnetometer, gyro, temperature-, and pressure-sensors gather running form data. The data is processed by the Lumo Run’s proprietary algorithms in real-time, synching to the user’s Bluetooth 4.0 (and later) smartphone―using the nRF52832 SoC’s Bluetooth low energy wireless connectivity―and generating a range of metrics that are presented to the user via the Lumo Run iOS app for in-run coaching and post-workout analysis.

The Lumo Run app provides real time audio cues as well as visual measurement of the runner’s form. For users who do not want to carry a smartphone while running, the Lumo Run pod can independently collect data that can be later synched to the user’s smartphone for post-run data analysis. The app recommends which metrics require improvement, and offers suggested exercises to help build muscle in weaker areas that can contribute to poor form, and eventually lead to injury.

“While other running wearables target the feet, Lumo Run provides data on the core and pelvis which are hugely important when it comes to the way the rest of a runner’s body moves,” says Andrew Chang, Chief Technology Officer, Lumo Bodytech. “The accuracy of these metrics ensures that runners are reworking their form in a way that helps reduce the risk of injury and encourage a more efficient running experience.”

Lumo Run employs a 75mAh Li-ion battery that provides up to 20 hours of run time, and seven days of standby time between recharges, thanks in part to the ultra low power consumption of the nRF52832 SoC. The nRF52832 SoC has been engineered to minimize power consumption with features such as the 2.4GHz radio’s 5.5mA peak RX/TX currents and a fully-automatic power management system that reduces power consumption by up to 80 percent compared with Nordic’s nRF51 Series SoCs. The result is a Bluetooth low energy solution which offers 90 CoreMark/mA, up to twice as power efficient as competing devices.

Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth low energy SoC, a member of Nordic Semiconductor’s sixth generation of ultra low power (ULP) wireless connectivity solutions, combines a 64MHz, 32-bit ARM® Cortex™ M4F processor with a 2.4GHz multiprotocol radio (fully compatible with Bluetooth 4.2, ANT™ and proprietary 2.4GHz RF software) with -96 dB RX sensitivity, with 512 kB Flash memory and 64 kB RAM. When launched, the SoC was the world’s highest performance single-chip Bluetooth low energy solution, delivering up to 60 percent more generic processing power, offering 10 times the Floating Point performance and twice the DSP performance compared to competing solutions.

“We selected the nRF52832 because of its size, performance, and power management efficiency,” says Chang. “The high performance and low power consumption of Bluetooth low energy was very important in building our product to provide the best user experience.”
