Nordic Semiconductor nRF52 Series-based Bluetooth low energy water bottle cap helps users track precise fluid consumption and prevent dehydration

The ‘Trago Cap’ employs Nordic’s nRF52832 SoC to provide Bluetooth low energy wireless connectivity between the water bottle cap and iOS and Android smartphones and tablets

November 25, 2016 – Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Austin, TX-based connected technology company, Trago, has launched a smart hydration system called the ‘Trago Cap’. The Trago Cap is a water bottle cap that can be fitted to any standard wide mouth water bottle to measure the user’s fluid consumption. It employs Nordic’s nRF52832 System-on-Chip (SoC) to provide Bluetooth® low energy (previously known as Bluetooth Smart) wireless connectivity between the cap and Bluetooth 4.0 (or later) iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.

In operation, the Trago Cap employs sonar to measure the change in fluid level in the user’s water bottle to a fraction of an ounce. The smart cap works not only with water, but also with any other fluid. This data is then transmitted―using the nRF52832 SoC’s Bluetooth low energy wireless connectivity―to iOS and Android devices running the Trago app, from where the user can monitor their precise fluid intake. The app integrates data including body type, local weather, activity levels, and fluid intake to provide predictive, personalized, and actionable feedback and notifications in the form of hydration goals and reminders. The information allows the user to optimize the timing of their fluid intake, even before their body tells them it’s dehydrated.

The Trago app also connects to third party fitness platforms including Apple HealthKit, Fitbit, Google Fit, and Under Armour Record, allowing the user to understand their activity level and hydration requirements on the go. For example, if the user is recording a run on their activity tracker, the Trago app can receive the run data in real-time, and advise the user to adjust their hydration recovery schedule based on the duration and intensity of their workout. Equally, if the user flies from sea level to the mountains, Trago recognizes the change in elevation and adjusts the hydration goal for the day to reflect the travel and change in altitude.

The Trago Cap is powered by a single CR2032 coin cell battery, providing in standard operation up to 6 months battery life before replacement, thanks in part to the ultra low power consumption of the nRF52832 SoC. The nRF52832 has been engineered to minimize power consumption with features such as the 2.4GHz radio’s 5.5mA peak RX/TX currents and a fully-automatic power management system that reduces power consumption by up to 80 percent compared with Nordic’s nRF51 Series SoCs. The result is a Bluetooth low energy solution which offers 90 CoreMark/mA, up to twice as power efficient as competing devices.

Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth low energy SoC, a member of Nordic Semiconductor’s sixth generation of ultra low power (ULP) wireless connectivity solutions, combines a 64MHz, 32-bit ARM® Cortex® M4F processor with a 2.4GHz multiprotocol radio (fully compatible with Bluetooth 4.2, ANT™ and proprietary 2.4GHz RF software) featuring -96dB RX sensitivity, with 512kB Flash memory and 64kB RAM. When launched, the SoC was the world’s highest performance single-chip Bluetooth low energy solution, delivering up to 60 percent more generic processing power, offering 10 times the Floating Point performance and twice the DSP performance compared to competing solutions.
