The Solar powered sensor beacon is powered only by the solar panel.
External power management circuits and rechargeable batteries are required in typical solar powered applications, but the Solar powered sensor beacon is designed without this circuitry: making it as small, cheap, and power efficient as possible. The Solar powered sensor beacon firmware is, by default, configured to start up the radio, read out data from an external sensor, broadcast the data on all three advertising channels, go to sleep, and then repeat the procedure a specified time later. Sensor data is updated every ten seconds, and the latest data is used in advertisement broadcasts every second.
The Solar powered sensor beacon is an example application where Nordic Semiconductor is providing the firmware and the hardware files, like the pbc layout and BOM. However, the Solar powered sensor beacon will not be sold as a complete reference design kit.
