Kratos Provides Advanced Beamforming Subassemblies for Phased Array Radar Systems

Kratos designs and manufactures combat-proven beamforming subassemblies optimized for phased-array radar systems. The devices enable precise electronic beam steering, fast target acquisition, dynamic scanning, interference, and jamming rejection. They are tuned specifically to work best at L-band and IFF frequencies and are built using surface mount technology (SMT).

Rather than relying on dozens of discrete parts spread across a board, the company’s multifunctional assemblies integrate attenuators, phase shifters, switches, amplifiers, and control circuitry into a single, precisely engineered module.  These are compact, ruggedized modules designed to survive shock, vibration, altitude, and temperature extremes. The designs prioritize high reliability, wide bandwidth, and SWaP optimization (Size, Weight, and Power).

L-band (~1–2 GHz) is widely used for long-range surveillance radars, air traffic control, and early-warning systems. IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) operates in nearby frequency ranges and is used to identify friendly aircraft, prevent fratricide, and misidentification. The assemblies control the amplitude and phase of signals feeding each antenna element, allowing the radar beam to steer electronically—instantly, and without moving parts.
