Mini-Circuits Introduces New Series of Fixed Attenuators for Space-Constrained High-Frequency RF Designs

Mini-Circuits, a manufacturer of RF, microwave, and millimeter wave components and systems, has introduced the XAT-Series of fixed attenuators, designed to support high-density RF applications requiring compact form factors without compromising performance. Covering frequencies from DC to 45 GHz, the new series combines miniature packaging with high power handling and consistent electrical performance for a broad range of commercial and defense applications.

The XAT-Series is housed in a 2-lead, 1 x 1 mm QFN-style package, making it one of the smallest MMIC fixed attenuator families available. The compact footprint enables designers to reduce PCB area while supporting increasingly dense RF layouts used in modern communication, aerospace, and test systems.

Built using a gallium arsenide semiconductor process, the attenuators feature a bidirectional, fully absorptive architecture that delivers stable attenuation characteristics across the operating frequency range. The design provides excellent passband flatness, a typical return loss of 16 dB, and repeatable performance from DC to 45 GHz, helping maintain signal integrity in high-frequency RF signal chains.

The XAT-Series also supports input power handling of up to 2 W, allowing it to operate in demanding RF environments where both compact size and reliable performance are required. These characteristics make the devices suitable for applications such as test and measurement equipment, satellite communications, radar systems, electronic warfare and electronic countermeasure platforms, telecommunications infrastructure, and 5G networks.

Mini-Circuits currently offers attenuation values ranging from 0 dB to 10 dB as standard stock models, enabling immediate integration into new and existing RF designs. The company also plans to expand the product family with models offering attenuation values of up to 30 dB, providing engineers with additional design flexibility for a wider range of signal conditioning requirements.

By combining ultra-compact packaging, wideband operation, and robust RF performance, the XAT-Series expands Mini-Circuits’ portfolio of passive RF components for next-generation wireless, aerospace, defense, and instrumentation systems where board space, reliability, and electrical performance are critical design considerations.
