Nordic brings ultra-low power edge-AI to Sub-GHz for smart metering, asset tracking and building automation
Reliable connectivity through walls and underground for intelligent devices that must work for years on a battery in hard-to-reach places, on license-exempt bands
Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low-power wireless solutions, today announces its expansion into long-range, license-exempt Sub-GHz connectivity, with integrated ultra-low-power, security, and edge AI.
With built-in security and edge compute, battery-powered devices will stay protected and process data locally. Water meters, asset trackers, and building sensors that utilize this Sub-GHz solution can remain in the field for years on a single battery, without a mobile operator or data plan.
By adding Sub-GHz connectivity to Nordic’s wireless chip-to-cloud solution, developers who build on Nordic today can add license-exempt, wide-area coverage while keeping the same software, tools, cloud services, and support they are already familiar with.
Long range and ultra-low power
Sub-GHz radios carry signals over long distances and through walls and underground meter pits. The radio bands are license-exempt, meaning networks can run without a mobile operator. The technology suits products that must work for years on a battery in hard-to-reach places, from water meters to trackers on shipping containers.
Nordic will combine ultra-low power, strong security, and edge compute across Sub-GHz and DECT NR+, so battery-powered devices can stay in the field longer, stay protected, and process data locally. The solution will build on Nordic’s proven 22 nm ultra-low-power platform.
Open standards protect longstanding investments
Nordic’s Sub-GHz offering will focus on open standards while also supporting the proprietary protocols already used in installed networks with a very flexible modem. Developers will get interoperability, a multi-vendor ecosystem, and no lock-in to a single supplier’s stack. Those qualities are critical for applications where the network must run for a decade or more and stay maintainable and certifiable.
One partner, full wireless solution
Sub-GHz will join a Nordic portfolio that already spans Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE), Wi-Fi®, Thread®, Zigbee®, Matter®, Cellular IoT, satellite/Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN), and DECT NR+, all within a single, unified development experience.
