Smart Grid Specialist Meets Demand for Low-Cost, High-Reliability Metering Solutions
Between the hyperscale data center building boom, growing electric vehicle adoption, and greater usage of air conditioning amid climate change, electric utilities worldwide are struggling to meet soaring demand from both consumers and businesses. That makes smart grid technologies more important than ever for maximizing capacity, reliability, and operational savings.
Across the global smart‑metering industry, utilities and energy‑service providers are under intense pressure to modernize infrastructure while keeping costs down for consumers. As energy systems become more decentralized and digitized, reliable connectivity has emerged as a foundational requirement — particularly for real‑time monitoring, fault detection, and automated control. However, many deployments still struggle with inconsistent coverage, power constraints, and escalating hardware costs, especially in dense urban environments.
The Challenge:
For this electricity monitoring specialist, whose expertise spans energy management, automation, and sustainability consulting, connectivity is a critical enabler of its next‑generation solution. Its energy‑management platform provides real‑time data capture, detailed reporting, and advanced analytics — all while remaining affordable and scalable enough for large-scale deployments.
The technical challenge was twofold. First, a rock-solid wireless connection is critical for ensuring that data is always flowing in both directions. It’s the foundation for applications such as real‑time monitoring, fault detection, and automated control. That’s a tall order, considering that endpoints are in a wide variety of locations, including outdoor meter cabinets and deep inside buildings.
Second, the solution had to scale rapidly across multiple sites without increasing cost or complexity. Those would undermine its addressable market and revenue potential.
“Our vision was clear — give consumers and asset owners real visibility into energy usage without driving up deployment costs,” says an executive stakeholder. “Connectivity reliability and power efficiency were non‑negotiable.”
These challenges increased in urban environments, where cellular networks struggled to reach smart meters, fault‑detection cameras, and smart building IoT devices buried deep in concrete canyons and inside buildings. All of those devices require greater than 99.9% uptime, and even when cellular networks could reach them, congestion during peak usage hours kept their data from getting through in a timely manner. Any connectivity lapse directly impacted operational visibility and system resilience.
To succeed, this electricity monitoring specialist needed a cellular IoT solution that combines robust coverage, low power consumption, strong security, and long‑term scalability — all without inflating bill‑of‑materials costs.
The Solution:
To address these challenges, the company partnered with Taoglas, leveraging both its proven antenna portfolio and deep RF engineering expertise.
It selected the PC60 Wideband Cellular PCB Antenna, supporting 617–6000 MHz in a compact 90 × 15 mm form factor. The antenna’s wideband performance enables support for global 5G and LTE cellular bands, delivering high efficiency to assist with PTCRB certification. Its slim, low-profile design allows flexible integration either on or off the main device PCB, with 3M peel‑and‑stick adhesive for straightforward installation and optional through‑hole mounting where adhesive is not suitable. The design eliminates the need for complex matching or tuning, simplifying integration and reducing overall design time. A 1.37 mm RF cable with an I‑PEX MHF1 connector ensures a reliable connection to the device.
Taoglas’ engineering services also played a key role in optimizing the end‑to‑end system. Through Passive Antenna Testing, Matching, and Fine‑Tuning (CSA‑20), Taoglas engineers maximized antenna efficiency within the customer’s final device housing. This was complemented by Cellular OTA TIS (CSA‑31) and TRP testing (CSA‑30) to validate real‑world receive sensitivity and transmit power under realistic operating conditions.
“Taoglas didn’t just supply an antenna — they became an extension of our engineering team,” the executive says. “Their testing workflows gave us confidence that performance in the lab would translate directly to performance in the field.”
For dense‑urban deployments, the solution was further enhanced through a private LTE (and future‑ready 5G) neutral‑host architecture, combining low‑power small cells with a Distributed Antenna System (DAS). This approach eliminated indoor coverage gaps, increased network capacity, and supported thousands of concurrent IoT sessions without congestion.
“The combination of Taoglas hardware expertise and network‑level insight allowed us to deploy at scale without compromising reliability,” the executive says.
The Outcome:
The result is a highly resilient, scalable energy‑management platform capable of supporting critical infrastructure across diverse environments.
In large‑scale urban applications, the private LTE/DAS deployment delivers greater than 99.9% coverage availability, even during peak demand periods. Smart‑grid meters, HVAC optimization systems, and fault‑detection cameras maintain continuous connectivity, enabling real‑time monitoring and faster response to anomalies.
From a business perspective, the optimized antenna performance reduced power consumption and minimized retransmissions, directly extending device lifespan and lowering maintenance costs. The compact PCB antenna design also simplified manufacturing and accelerated rollout timelines across multiple sites.
“We were able to meet our performance targets while staying true to our commitment to affordability,” the executive says. “That balance is what ultimately enables wider adoption and real impact on sustainability.”
And by delivering a secure, low‑power, and cost‑effective solution that empowers consumers and asset owners alike, the solution improved operational efficiency for customers and strengthened its reputation as a trusted provider of scalable, future‑ready energy‑management solutions.
