Nordic Semiconductor Bluetooth low energy-based smart LED flashlights provide wireless remote configuration and battery monitoring capabilities

FOURSEVENS Quark Series flashlights employ Nordic’s nRF51822 SoC to enable users to remotely control flashlights from iOS smartphones and tablets

Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Kennesaw, GA-based flashlight manufacturer, FOURSEVENS, has selected Nordic’s multiple award-winning nRF51822 Bluetooth® low energy (previously known as Bluetooth Smart) System-on-Chip (SoC) for its Quark Smart series of LED flashlights.

The Quark Smart LED flashlights are available in three different models, the Quark Smart QSL, the Quark Smart QS2L-X, and the Quark Smart QS2A-X. The QSL employs one CR123A battery, has a maximum 350 lumen output, and a minimum run time of 90 minutes. The QS2L-X employs two CR123A batteries, has a maximum 950 lumen output, and a minimum run time of 96 minutes. The QS2A-X employs two AA batteries, has a maximum 350 lumen output, and a minimum run time of two hours.

Each of the flashlights employs Nordic’s nRF51822 SoC to provide Bluetooth low energy wireless connectivity between the flashlight and iOS devices. The mobile device runs FOURSEVENS’ Smart Flashlight app allowing the user to monitor the status of the flashlight’s battery, view remaining battery run time, and set battery level alarms to notify the user when the batteries need to be replaced. The user can also configure various flashlight modes to remotely control brightness, set proximity alarms, as well as track and locate the flashlight in the event it is lost.

Nordic’s nRF51822 is a powerful and flexible multiprotocol SoC ideally suited for Bluetooth low energy and 2.4GHz ultra low-power wireless applications. The nRF51822 is built around a 32-bit ARM® Cortex™ M0 CPU with 256kB/128kB flash and 32kB/16kB RAM. The embedded 2.4GHz transceiver is fully compliant with Bluetooth 4.2, the latest Bluetooth low energy specification. In the Quark Smart flashlights, the nRF51822 SoC provides wireless connectivity between the flashlights and iOS-compatible Bluetooth 4.0 (and later) devices such as smartphones and tablets.
