The Dolphin PTM 215B Pushbutton Transmitter Module from EnOcean enables OEMs to develop self-powered smart lighting solutions
Nordic Semiconductor today announces that German energy harvesting wireless technology manufacturer, EnOcean, has selected Nordic’s multiple award-winning nRF51822 Bluetooth® low energy (previously known as Bluetooth Smart) System-on-Chip (SoC) for its Dolphin PTM 215B Pushbutton Transmitter Module.
The battery-free, energy harvesting PTM 215B module eases the development of self-powered wireless wall mounted- or portable-switches for use in smart-lighting applications. The addition of the PTM 215B to the EnOcean range of wireless products allows manufacturers to take advantage of the increasing popularity of Bluetooth low energy for the smart-home sector and modern light control.
The Dolphin sensor modules use a miniaturized electro-dynamic energy transducer that converts motion, light, or temperature differences into electrical energy. Together with an efficient energy management system, the energy harvesting technology ensures reliable communication between maintenance-free Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The maintenance-free wireless sensor solutions from EnOcean thus increase flexibility, usability, and energy efficiency in smart buildings, while also significantly saving time and money. Because of the ultra low power consumption of the nRF51822 the harvested energy is sufficient to power wireless control of Bluetooth low energy peripherals such as smart light bulbs. The modules also offer Near Field Communication (NFC) capability, making it easier to configure the switch upon initial set-up.
“EnOcean selected the nRF51822 chip as it offers the best cost/performance trade off,” says Matthias Kassner, Product Marketing Director at EnOcean. “We had not worked with Nordic before but the company was recommended to us by several of our key customers. We have been very impressed by the quality and attitude of the entire Nordic team and look forward to a continued cooperation.”
The PTM 215B module comes in a 40 by 40 by 11.2mm standardized form factor, allowing product manufacturers to easily integrate the new module into existing product ranges, and into a large number of existing switch designs. In addition to the radio-based switch module, the 2.4GHz Bluetooth low energy portfolio from EnOcean also includes white label end products: energy harvesting wireless single-rocker (ESRP) and dual rocker (EDRP) switches for the American market.
Nordic’s nRF51822 is a powerful and flexible multiprotocol SoC ideally suited for Bluetooth low energy and 2.4GHz ultra low-power wireless applications. The nRF51822 is built around a 32-bit ARM® Cortex™ M0 CPU with 256kB/128kB flash and 32kB/16kB RAM. The embedded 2.4GHz transceiver is fully compliant with Bluetooth 4.2, the latest Bluetooth low energy specification.
EnOcean will demonstrate at Nordic Semiconductor’s booth #44744 during CES 2017.
