IO Ninja Improvements: New Regex Markup Engine, HID Plugins, and More
Tibbo just rolled out a major update to IO Ninja, their versatile communications debugging tool for Windows, Linux, and macOS.
The highlight of the release V5.5.0 is the new fast Regex Markup engine. The original Regex Markup facility introduced a year ago was a breakthrough — its ability to highlight critical snippets of data and automatically split data streams into packets was enthusiastically welcomed by our users. In this new release, the Regex Markup has undergone an extensive makeover and is now better than ever!
IO Ninja’s Regex Markup is now based on substantially modified Google RE2— one of the fastest industry-standard libraries for regular expression processing. The new engine is 3x faster and more robust. It also supports everything RE2 does, including whole-word and case-insensitive options that were missing from the original implementation.

One other innovation is the addition of HID Terminal and HID Monitor plugins.
HID stands for Human Interface Device. Keyboards, mice, and game controllers are common HID devices, but many other types of USB products — card readers, LED lights, telephony accessories, to name but a few — often expose the HID interface as well.
The HID plugins in IO Ninja provide a convenient and powerful toolset for low-level debugging of HID devices. These tools will prove extremely helpful for a wide range of professionals — from developers of new HID products to hobbyists attempting to incorporate an old controller into their latest project.
Also in this release:
- A critical update to the Device Monitor for Linux (used for software-level monitoring of serial ports);
- Enhanced and optimized binary data view now accurately displays control, continuation, and all other special characters;
- Regex processing facilities in Jancy (the scripting language of IO Ninja) received a significant performance boost from switching to Google RE2;
- As always, there were numerous bug fixes and minor improvements!
