Imagine troubleshooting a legacy system where devices talk to each other over RS485 (or some other flavor of serial). You want to see the packets these modules exchange — that could be the key to understanding why the system isn’t working as intended. But first, you need to figure out the baud rate and other serial parameters they use. Of course, you have no datasheets, and Google is not much help either, sending you to abandoned websites from the ’90s or unanswered posts on obscure Chinese forums. Bummer.
(And even with a datasheet, it’s not always easy — devices may use non-standard configurations, parameters may be specified as ranges rather than exact values, and the datasheets themselves sometimes contain errors.)
