The Electron all-in-one cellular development kit simplifies access to IoT
Enniscorthy, Ireland and San Diego, Calif,– Taoglas, a leading provider of IoT (Internet of Things) and M2M (Machine-to-Machine) antenna solutions has partnered with Particle, a prototype-to-production platform for IoT products, to add our world class PC104 antenna into Particle’s Electron development kit.
The Electron is a simple and highly customizable plug-and-play, cellular development kit designed to give cellular radio applications easier access to the IoT at a competitive price. The Electron ships in both 2G and 3G models and comes complete with breadboard, Particle PCB, Particle SIM, battery, and a Taoglas embedded Pentaband PCB antenna, the PC104, as standard.
The PC104, with its high efficiency (greater than 50%), is a unique dipole design that offers exceptional performance and its compact size ensures that it is the perfect addition to Particle’s design. The PC104 provides omni-directional gain across all 2G and 3G bands ensuring constant reception and transmission, making it a great choice for the development kit.
Easy access to the IoT market
The Electron development kit is fully certified by the FCC, and is supported by multiple US cellular carriers, such as AT&T & T-Mobile. Because it is ready to plug and play, it allows product creators to get to market even quicker. Versions of the Electron development kit, designed to work with 2G and 3G bandwidths in the EMEA region, are also available. In total, Particle’s Electron operates in over 100 countries worldwide.
Particle also simplifies the task of configuring IoT products with its unique setup process – either through the device smartphone app or the browser – which eliminates the need to incorporate complex programming procedures.
The Electron is ideal for entrants to the 2G/3G IoT market and its pricing structure makes it perfect for start-ups with smaller volume orders and for customers currently working on pilot test runs.
Commenting on Taoglas’ involvement on the Electron, Particle CEO and Co-Founder, Zach Supalla, remarked:
“Because of the challenges it solves for our customers, we knew the Electron would be used in commercial products all over the World. We needed to find a robust, high-quality antenna to support a wide variety of customer needs, and Taoglas’ comprehensive product portfolio, service offerings, and reputation for top-notch quality made them the clear choice. We’re thrilled to be working with Taoglas on the Electron.”
Dermot O’Shea, Taoglas Joint CEO, remarked
“It was great to hear from the Particle team and we were thrilled to be asked to suggest some solutions. We loved the idea the first time we saw it and are honored to be part of the Electron development kit. The added benefit for Taoglas is we have the opportunity to support Particle customers that may want to develop their own IoT product in higher volume production at a later stage.”
Further implementation options
The Electron is set to make big waves in the IoT market, helping to reduce the complexity, cost, and time associated with transitioning products from “proof of concept” to production stages. It ensures innovative new products can be fully actualized prior to full development. In instances where further device testing is needed, Taoglas engineers can be engaged to work with hardware designers to fine tune antenna performance within a product and ensure optimal efficiency prior to implementation. Our antenna specialists will work with customers on antenna optimization and device configuration to simplify the process and ensure a seamless entry to market. Particle is a prototype-to-production platform for building Internet of Things (IOT) products. Particle was founded in 2012 by Zach Supalla (CEO) and Zachary Crockett (CTO). Particle’s first product, the Spark Core, was launched on Kickstarter in 2013 and raised nearly $600,000 as the World’s first open-source development kit for connected products. Since then, Particle has launched the Photon, a 2ndgeneration Wi-Fi development kit, and the Electron, a new 2G/3G development kit. Particle has sold over 150,000 devices to engineers in over 150 countries and supports the largest developer community in the Internet of Things.
