Suunto Spartan Ultra and Spartan Sport take advantage of the nRF51822 SoC to monitor altitude, time, distance, and calories consumed and wirelessly connect with smartphones
Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Vantaa, Finland-based Suunto, has launched the Suunto Spartan Solution, multisport GPS watches employing Nordic’s multiple award-winning nRF51822 Bluetooth® low energy System-on-Chip (SoC). The GPS watches are supported by the Suunto Movescount.com Cloud platform and iOS- and Android-compatible app.
The Suunto Spartan collection comprises the Suunto Spartan Ultra series and Sunnto Spartan Sport series of multisport GPS watches. Both the Suunto Spartan Ultra and Suunto Spartan Sport provide a color touch screen, 100m water resistance, GPS altitude measurement, GPS tracking and route navigation, heart rate measurement with calories, peak training effect, and recovery time, as well as support for over 80 sports with racing and interval modes. In addition, the Suunto Spartan Ultra provides barometric altitude measurement for sports requiring precision altitude readings. Suunto Spartan Ultra and Suunto Spartan Sport are also both compatible with a range of Suunto and third party accessories including heart rate monitors, running and cycling power meters, as well as cycling speed, distance, and cadence sensors.
Post-workout activity data from the Spartan Ultra and Spartan Sport can be synced to the Movescount app running on iOS and Android Bluetooth 4.0 (and later) smartphones and tablets via the Nordic nRF51822 SoCs Bluetooth low energy wireless connectivity. From the app users can track their distance, speed, calories burned, and view their training history, as well as explore new routes and sync their data to the Movescount.com Cloud platform. The Cloud platform provides detailed data analysis, community training insights, heatmaps of popular routes, as well as the ability for users to customize the views and features of their watch.
Both Spartan Ultra and Spartan Sport are powered by a rechargeable Li-Poly battery. In the case of Spartan Ultra providing 15 days between recharges in watch mode, and 18 hours in full power GPS training mode. Spartan Sport provides 10 days in watch mode, and 10 hours in full power GPS training mode. The battery life of both Ultra and Sport is extended due to the ultra low power characteristics of the nRF51822 SoC.
Nordic’s nRF51822 is a powerful and flexible multiprotocol SoC ideally suited for Bluetooth low energy and 2.4GHz ultra low-power wireless applications. The nRF51822 is built around a 32-bit ARM® Cortex™ M0 CPU with 256kB/128kB flash and 32kB/16kB RAM. The embedded 2.4GHz transceiver is fully compliant with Bluetooth 4.2.
