Meet EM Research’s groundbreaking LCO series: a line of fixed frequency synthesizers with exceptionally low output power variation. These “Legendary Calibration Oscillators” feature an output power variation of ±0.2 dBm over a temperature range of 0ºC to 50ºC, and a variation with power cycle of ±0.1 dBm.

The LCO series excels at meeting these demanding output specifications, making them ideal for use as testing oscillators that require highly stable output power, such as multi-tone intermodulation testing and as calibration sources for receiver chains.

 

Product Overview:

The LCO series are fixed bandwidth frequency synthesizers that can provide outputs ranging from 1 GHz to 30.5 GHz. LCOs feature extremely low output power variation: ±0.2 dBm over temperature range 0 to 50ºC, and ±0.1 dBm with power cycle. These synthesizers offer output power up to +10 dBm, and can be configured to use either an external reference from 5 to 100 MHz, or an optional internal reference.

LCO synthesizers operate from a +5 V supply and are built in a compact, connectorized package with dimensions 4.5″ x 2.5″ x 0.6″ or smaller. Designed for reliable performance in laboratory and field environments, the LCO series is the perfect fit for a wide range of testing and calibration applications.

Welcome to EM Research’s spotlight product, our exceptional ZFR programmable frequency synthesizer series. ZFR frequency synthesizers can be configured for fast-switching capable of 120µs switch speeds over 4 octaves of bandwidth. They can also be configured for a highly stable output power, ±0.2 dBm over temperature, frequencies up to 40 GHz, and step size down to 10 KHz. All with industry leading phase noise.

These high-performing synthesizers can be custom tailored to the frequency range and control interface required, so they excel in a wide range of applications from laboratory use to airborne electronics. Offered in a compact package, the ZFR is one of our most versatile products.

Product Overview:

The ZFR series is a line of cutting edge programmable frequency synthesizers, featuring multi-octave band widths, low phase noise, step sizes as low as 10 KHz, switch speeds as low as 125 µs, frequencies to 40 GHz and the option of a highly stable output power.

The ZFR is highly customizable. In addition to broadband, fast switching versions, it can also be configured for highly stable power output, ±0.2 ppm over temperature, at frequencies up to 40 GHz. Optional USB programming can be included in addition to high speed serial communication controls. ZFR units are available with a standalone internal reference, and can also be configured to switch seamlessly between an external reference and the internal reference.

The ZFR series can deliver 1.25 to 20 GHz in a remarkably small connectorized package, typically 2.5” x 4.5” x 0.6”. With high performance across the board and a uniquely versatile design, the ZFR series exemplifies EM Research capabilities.

Product Examples

An exemplary ZFR series synthesizer is the ZFR-20000-09, which features a frequency bandwidth of 4.0 GHz to 20 GHz. The step size is 10 MHz (available to 10 KHz), it accepts a 10 MHz external reference, and exhibits a switch speed of less than 150 µs. It comes in a compact 2.5” x 4.5” x 0.6” sized package, operates from a 5.0V supply, and is controlled by a high speed serial communication interface.

The ZFR-12750-06 is a Ku band synthesizer and offers both a highly stable output power and a USB interface, as well as wide bandwidth, and small step size. Also notable is the ZFR-30500-03, which outputs in Ka band from 28 to 30.5 GHz with an incredibly stable power output of ±0.2 dBm over temperature.

The ZFR-16000-02 from EM Research is a programmable frequency synthesizer that can generate an output frequency from 2000 to 16000 MHz. This multi-octave frequency synthesizer has a low phase noise, a step size of 10 MHz and an output power of up to 13 dBm. The frequency can be tailored to a specific value using the control interface provided. It can be used in a wide range of applications from lab benchtops to airborne military electronics. The SLX Series from EM Research are programmable frequency synthesizers that operate from 50 to 6000 MHz. The synthesizers provide an output power of up to 7 dBm and require an external reference from 5 to 100 MHz. The synthesized signal has a low phase noise with harmonics less than -15 dBc and spurious less than -50 dBc. The synthezisers require a supply voltage of 3-5 V and draws a current of 65 mA. They are available in a surface mount package that measures 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.15 inches.

The THOR Series from EM Research are Programmable Frequency Synthesizers that operate from 1 to 18 GHz. The synthesizers provide an output power of up to 14 dBm and require an external reference from 5 to 200 MHz. The synthesized signal has a low phase noise with harmonics less than -25 dBc and spurious less than -60 dBc. The synthezisers require a supply voltage of 5, 8 or 15 VDC and draw a current of under 300 mA. They are available in a module that measures 2.5 x 1.1 x 0.4 inches with SMA connectors.

ZFR-20000-XA: Broadband, High Performance Synthesizer

Designed as a rugged, low-profile synthesizer for airborne radar systems operating from 4 to 20 GHz

The ZFR-20000-XA is a multi-octave frequency synthesizer operating from 4 to 20 GHz with fast switching capability (<100 µSec) and <-60 dBc spurs across the entire range. The ZFR offers a low profile design for use as a local oscillator in airborne radar applications capable of withstanding high vibration and shock.

The ZFR-20000-XA locks to an external 10 MHz reference and exhibits extremely low phase noise at any frequency; <-101 dBc/Hz @ 4 GHz and <-89 dBc/Hz @ 20 GHz, both at 100 KHz offset. The device also features +10 dBm output power, 10 MHz step size, and powered through a +5V supply with <1500 mA current draw. This small, rugged package (4.5” x 2.5” x 0.6”) features SMA RF connectors and a 21-pin Micro-D header for I/O and operates over the temperature range of -40° C to +85° C with extended temperatures available.
